Find out in this special in-conversation event in which Paul McVeigh talks candidly to columnist Laura Lockington, reads excerpts from the book, takes questions from the audience and sheds light on what it was like to grow up at the height of the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Paul McVeigh introduces one of his favourite films: Douglas Sirk’s potent critique of American society: Imitation of Life, a film he feels echoes the restrictions and confinement he experienced growing up in Northern Ireland.
A struggling young actress with a six-year-old daughter sets up housekeeping with a homeless black widow (played by Juanita Moore who received an Academy Award nomination for her performance) and her light-skinned eight-year-old daughter who rejects her mother by trying to pass for white.

On the official centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising we will be screening Cal: a story set during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Cal, young man on the fringes of the IRA, with no taste for violence, becomes involved with Marcella, a Catholic woman whose husband, a Protestant policeman, was killed one year earlier by the IRA.
This special screening will be introduced by Graham Dawson: professor of Historical Cultural Studies, at the University of Brighton and Director of the Centre for Research in Memory, Narrative and Histories which he co-founded. Since 1995 the main focus of his research has been on questions of cultural memory, violence and conflict transformation in the Irish Troubles and the peace process.
